for reminding people of this. I worked in an animal clinic and saw many Chrismas pets become neglected nuisances by summer. Keep writing!

My first Cairn was from a pet store, kind of an impulse buy. I love her dearly, but I quickly learned that is not the way to get a puppy. When it came time to get her a little brother, I went to reputable breeder who breeds for conformation, health, and temperament. He's such a perfect fit for us. As much as I love both my dogs, the difference in pet stores/backyard breeders and reputable breeders is amazing.

Thanks for saying what needs to be said over and over!

Especially now, when the dalmation movie is hitting theaters, this message is way to important to over look!

Here's to hoping that your message makes it through to even one person before a huge mistake is made.

Make the promise to search for a dog together AFTER the holidays and WHEN all the promises of a plan are worked out.

Thanks for the kind words and for the alert that shelters might issue gift certificates/pre-paid adoption certificates. Pups & People stand to benefit from the benevolent wisdom in this idea! Jacinta

for calling an opportunistic weasel when you see one. scum is what they are, and you can dang well bet that none of the christmas pups come with a buy-back clause - an integral part of any reputable breeders contract.

some shelters are now offering gift certificates - pre-paid adoption certificates good ONLY after the first of the new year. that sounds like a winning plan to me - save a life, everyone gets to help pick the pup out, and not redeemable until AFTER all that holiday mess is over. hopefully more shelters will catch on.

excellent excellent excellent.
